TEXTURES

OVERVIEW:

Most textures/colors reside in the midtones and require an adequate amount of illumination to accurately identify. Too much or too little of either is bad.

Texture is an attribute of light striking a surface.

There are three broad families of textures: Hard/Smooth, Rough and Soft
These come from the three things that happen to light.

Light can be...

Reflected
(Narrow Edges)
Diffused
(Wide Edges)
Absorbed
(Wide Edges)

Undisturbed

Broken/Shattered

Whether or not an edge is considered wide or narrow is determined by the length of the transition between values. Soft textures transition over a longer lngth than hard smooth textures.

Diffused light is like dropping black ink into water,
it spreads and thins until finally it has simply become part of the water.

Absorbed light is like pointing your flashlight beam
into the darkness where it dissipates over distance.
