WHAT IS DESIGN?

OVERVIEW:

There are three working definitions of 'Design' as it pertains to this course:

The first is by far the simplest...

"Design is anything but chance."

It does not just happen by accident, it is not
a crime of passion, it is always premeditated.

In exploring the useful definitions of Design it may be helpful
to have some other working definitions of words we may
associate with Design, like Illustration or Art.

An illustration is an image that conveys information to a specific audience.

Art is an image that help people see a new truth, or remember an old one.

Milton Glaser says,
"Design as an image that conveys information
to a specific audience with prior knowledge."

Almost like an illustration, but it is more targeted and
involves the knowledge of the audience which will view it.
Design has a goal, a purpose. The work is being done for a reason;
to convey a particular message to that specific audience.

The third definition of Design will be given here, but will have greater appeal as a definition after the introduction to Line and Direction.

"Design is an image that invites our viewer's eye
toeasily enter, keeps it moving while entertaining it,
and delays its exit as long as possible."
