COURSE DESCRIPTION: Drawing and Design Fundamentals is a basic drawing and design course. The course is designed to expose students to a variety of drawing and design techniques, materials and visual concepts, as well as to get students involved with the physical act of drawing and designing. Students will explore elements and principles involved in planning and organizing a unified design, with an emphasis on creativity, visual perception and eliciting viewer response.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

Organize effective approaches to the design and drawing process.  
 
2.
Use design and drawing principles to achieve unity with variety.  
 
3.
Use line in an expressive and descriptive manner.  
 
4.
Confidently use a variety of basic drawing tools.  
 
5.
Interpret and apply an accurate sense of scale and proportion to their designs and drawings.  
 
6.
Use the principles of perspective drawing to create the illusion of space and depth.  
 
7.
Establish a focal point that attracts the viewer’s eye in their designs and drawings.  
 
8.
Use value (shading) and color to create the illusion of space, depth, volume, texture and visual pattern.  
 
9.
Create rhythm and motion in their designs and drawings.  
 
10.
Identify and achieve various types of balance.  
 
11.
Develop an individual style and effectively illustrate personal concepts.  
 
12.
Develop a logical approach (setting parameters, sequential planning, etc.) to the completion of a well executed, expressive visual statement.  
 
13.
Present a body of hand-drawn images as portfolio pieces.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Class sessions will consist of instructor lectures, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and drawing projects. Students will be assigned reading from required texts and instructor provided hand-outs. Students should expect homework assignments.
